Brittany and the Bretons

Brittany is almost the size of Belgium and is the most westerly county of mainland Europe. Its coastline stretches some 750 miles.

The main occupation is fishing, whilst inland farming predominates in what is known as the 'Garden of France'. Brittany is also famous for its unique architecture - look out for the shapes of the church bell towers.

Delicacies in Brittany are, of course, crepes. Not known for wine production, nevertheless Brittany is famous for cider and calvados. The Bretons tend to make lunch their main meal of the day and a two hour dining session is not unusual.

Village and town restaurants offer good quality and value at a fixed price. They tend to close during the evenings in the smaller villages leaving only town restaurants open, plus creperies, transport stops and major hotels.
